Jane Eyre questions

1. I think the society has had some impact on some of the decisions I make especially with the media nowadays. When there are times where I have to make a decision on something, I usually think it over and reason it out with myself and also think about what would another person do if they were in this particular situation. And lastly I also think about the aftermath of it too.

2. I think an author’s gender does influence my decisions on certain books to read just on the way a story is written in perspective. I often read books written by women because I’m so used to reading from a woman’s perspective and I understand more than reading from a male’s point of view. I do believe it is a conscious decision on what choice I make in books

4. Well for me, I think it all depends on what type of love situation you’re in and how you have control over it. It also depends on what person you’re in a relationship with. There can be a person who understands the fact that while you still might need their help every now and then, you are still an independent person and can still take care of yourself. Where on the other hand, there can be a person who doesn’t understand at all and they just take advantage over it and can put you down just for your belief in that.

5. I never really thought of it but I don’t think a person social status affects their decision to get married or not. I believe that that’s just how they feel and they have the option to marry or not.

6. Honestly, I’m not sure. I never really thought of it as much. I think maybe there have been times where I might have believed in ghosts for a split second but never believed in them permanently. I would rather say spirits dealing with death or something like that.

9. Yes the environment and nature does have an impact on my moods and me a lot. There are times when the weather isn’t so great and I can be in the most horrible mood and there are also times where it can be great outside and I am doing well too.

Jane Eyre Introduction

1) Society vastly influences my decisions, even when I am not consciously aware of the influences. It is something that I am exposed to everyday and I have grown up with the understanding that society is basically a judgement system, which I have personally responded to by trying to avoid negative judgement by blending in. While I would love to be able to honestly say that I do the things I do solely because I want to do them, society does play a role in it.

2) An author's gender does not play a role in my selection of books, although I tend to like/relate better to books written by women (based on the books I consider to be my favorites.) I do not think it is an intentional bias because it tends to be women who write more of the style of books I read. I loved reading "Running With Scissors," It's Kind of a Funny Story," and "Getting Things Done" but I do not necessarily feel as much of a "connection" to the characters as I do with "Prozac Nation," "More, Now, Again," and "White Oleander." However, with regard to my selection of books, I typically base my selection on the appeal of the plot.

3) Personally, it does not bother me if an author uses a pseudonym or not. I do not choose books based on the author so it does not really matter. However, I think the author should do whatever it is that they want and feel most comfortable with. Pseudonyms have their advantages and disadvantages and have proved necessary at different time periods throughout history.

4) It is definitely possible to be in love with someone and still maintain your independence! Being in love means truly caring for that person and wanting to do whatever you can to make them happy. If someone wants to become completely dependent upon their partner, so be it, but the important part is that it does not HAVE to be that way. In a relationship, the people involved obviously have to compromise but that does not mean that they should EVER lose who they are, including their independence, if that is something they desire.

5) To an extent, someone's social status does affect the decision to marry that person. People marry people they know, or whoever is fixing them up knows, and typically people stay within their own demographics, or one that is similar to theirs, so the likelihood that they would be in a position of marrying someone in a VASTLY different social status is very little. However, someone's opinion of a future spouse is influenced by the social status, or reputation, of the future spouse and that does have a heavy impact on the decision. If someone is known as being very rude and lacking in their manners, it is likely that their social status would be affected by that, possibly deterring someone else from wanting to even associate with them.

6) I am not exactly sure about my beliefs of the supernatural.

7) I believe in coincidences.

8) No, I do not. I think that if I did have an encounter, it might change my opinion of the supernatural to something more concrete.

9) Nature definitely plays a role in my daily actions, starting the minute I wake up. The first thing I think about is what am I going to do today, which is often influenced by the weather. Then, if I decide I am going to do something out of the house, I get dressed, again based on the weather. I also tend to be more willing to help others avoid bad weather and would be more understanding if something changed as a result of the weather.

Assignment 2 -- Jane Eyre, pgs 1-49

What is Jane Eyre's job? Given what you've discovered about Charlotte Bronte in class, why would she give Jane this particular job? Who are Jane's allies? Who are her friends?
In addition to answering these questions, please also include your own observations and thoughts and questions about the reading so far.
If you run across words you don't understand, take note of them and bring them to class on Monday.

Jane Eyre

1. I think that's a very common question that gets asked a lot, to me at least. I think the society and people that i call my friends can definitely have an influence on the choices i make in some cases. I think that there are some subjects easier for me to sort of get "seduced" into doing what my friends want but others it's impossible because I feel to strong about that subject.

2. I don't really feel like the gender of the author of a book that i read matters because i don't understand how female writers are much different from male writers. They both write about fantasy, history, and everything so i guess it's a conscious decision for some people but not me.

3. I think pseudonyms can be very useful at times. For example let's say that someone is telling the police information on a big case, if the police put the persons name on the streets, chances are that the person isn't going to be alive, or the person is going to need to have their name changed. Also in a writers case, it can be useful because sometimes guys think that books written by women are for girls, so it could be an advantage for boys to buy the authors books because it may be a good story and it should be spread out, when if the author used her real name boys might not read the book.

4. I think that really love is when you love the person and you still maintain your independence. I feel this way because if you really love someone, it's not very likely that the other person will want to be in love with someone who says "I can't live without you." Also if you didn't have your independence then you would be very dependent on the other person and that can be a lot of pressure. I think the way the society is, it's more likely for both to have their independence because i think that if they didn't the situation of that couple would be a struggle.

5. In terms of celebrities, the position of both people matters i think. This is because some famous singer wouldn't want to be in one of the richest business in the U.S and be seen with some guy from anywhere. Also in regular society, even in T.V and you can hear people joke around about men and women only going for the other person because they have money. To me this is an affect of someone that has had issues with money and they think if they marry a rich person that they would be set for life.

6. Yes i believe in the supernatural.

7. I believe that fate is a just a row of choices that later affect your life in the long run.

8. I have had an encounter with the supernatural, and it was when i went to my friends cousins house and i went up to the bathroom and when i walked in the room, i heard a the voice of a women and i saw a shadow standing in front of me, but no one was there.

9. I think the nature effects how i interact with people when i want to hang out with my friends but it's raining and very cold. Also the weather can effect my mood if it's a raining day i get sad because i feel like there should be more colors.

Jane Eyre Questions

1) I think in some instances society does sometimes influence my decisions. My mom has a heavy influence on choices, some are not always my decisions though. Me being a teenager, there is always peer pressure. In addition to that there are things like the media who influence things I do like I may dress for weather.

2) Whenever I read a book I never even think about the author's gender, simply because I don't think that has an impact on me. I read Harry Potter for quite some time never think about the whether the author was a man or woman.

3) I think that pseudonyms are used so often that I don’t actually think anything of it. My only thoughts on it are the question why people have them. I think it is interesting to see certain people with pseudonyms like Mark Twain and Reese Witherspoon. But I think it is very successful sometimes in establishing themselves.

4) Yes. I think that the most important thing to do is for that person to maintain the same feeling and sense of independence that they may have had before being in love.

5) I think that based on someone’s thoughts on what other people’s feelings about them, may affect their decision to marry. In essence, “if my social status isn’t good, no one will come to support me on my wedding day.”

6) Somewhat.

7) I believe in both generally because they each both have different meanings. In addition, I think they sometimes have heavy relation to each other based on other people’s situations.

8) I saw a cloud formation that looked like a warrior battling a dragon when I was about five years old.

9) I think that nature does have an impact on me based on what is going on. For instance if it raining outside I may dress differently and make plans differently for events I may be going to.

Jane Eyre Pre-Reading.
RAFI.
1. I don’t know how to specify that answer. I think that society wouldn’t control the decisions I make and I would those decisions on my own.
2. An author’s gender doesn’t affect my reading. If I like a book I’ll read regardless if it is a man or a woman.
3. I don’t how pseudonyms can be helpful at times if the author wants to write more books under a false name.
4. By independence do you mean to have a will of your own then yes it is possible.
5. I don’t see how ones social status would stop them form marrying. This isn’t Tudor England so people don’t have to marry somebody else if they don’t want to and they don’t have to listen to their parents.
6. I do, because it would explain so many unexplained things.
7. I don’t know how to answer this question.
8. I have, at least 5 times in my life, and a few of them were scary.
9. I don’t know if nature has decided to control humans or something up in the clouds is controlling us, but we do things for a reason and when we do things, we do them.

Jane Eyre Pre-Reading

1. I think everyone is influenced by society, it may not be the mainstream society that is seen on the covers of magazines, but everyone is influenced by what they see in one way or another. Their are no originals, people are just mixtures of all the different people they have met.

2. The last few books I have read have been written by women, but that is because I have been reading the gossip girl series, the a-list series, and similar kinds of novels, I have not a found that has written such literature.

3. I feel like pen names are stupid, I feel they are only needed when they are writing something very personal such as a memoir.

4. "I don't need anyone to breathe for me, I have my own lungs."

5. I think this only happens when families get involved, because if they had a problem with social status than they problem would not have dated to begin with.

6. Maybe

7. Coincidences, its just weird how things work out, I don't think fate is real.

8. I have never had a supernatural encounter.

9. Yes I do believe so, when it rains I like sleep more, and in the hot weather/ super cold weather, I like to stay inside. I feel like I am happier the most in the spring.

Jane Eyre

1. I think society has less of an impact on my decision-making than the average person. I don’t really care much about what everyone else is doing, just what I enjoy doing.

2. I don’t take an authors gender into consideration before I read a book, I do tend to read more books written by men rather than women, but not consciously.

3. I think pseudonyms have their advantages in writing. Some people write very personal things that they don’t want their friends and family to know about. There are lots of practical reasons for having pseudonyms.

4. I think independence can be obtained while in love. It’s just important for both people in the relationship to consider each other equal.

5. I think social status does influence people’s decisions to get married. Often you hear about people “marrying into money,” but at the same time, being less fortunate can also bring people together.

6. Yes I do.

7. I believe in fate, rather than just coincidences. I believe everything happens for a reason.

8. No.

9. I do take nature into great consideration in my daily life. I love being outside so if I cant go out for whatever reason my day suddenly becomes very boring. It plays a role in my interactions with people because I tend to spend time with my friends doing things outside.

4. I dont think that you can be in love and maintain your indendence, when you love someone, their opinions influence what you think because of your feeling for them.

Jane eyre

1. It depends a lot because my opinion matters and might change the way people might think.
2. A lot. I think so.
3. I don’t really have an opinion about them.
4. It possible you have to work hard for it. NO
5. I don’t
6.no
7.coincidences
8.no
9 yes it does because sometimes if its rainy I don’t really like socializing. If its warm I feel just ok. And if its hot some people are yelling at each other and there uncomfortable.

Jane Eyre

1.How much do you think society influences your decisions? How? Why?
I think society influences my decisions a lot because a lot of the decisions I make are made on what this person might think or how that person might feel. I think that is because that is just how it works in the world these days.

2. Think about the last few books you have selected to read (not school assigned). How often does an author's gender influence what you choose to read? Is it a conscious decision?

Personally the last few books that I have read have been written by women. Also the book I am reading now is written by a woman. I think that woman write better books about high school drama and the things that happen on a daily basis in high school. I don't chose a book by who it is written by. I chose a book by the subject it is written on and its ability to grab my attention in the first few pages.

3. What is your opinion of pseudonyms? Do you think they are advantageous at times? Why or why not?

Well I do not know what advantageous means but I think it means to like have an advantage. So I do not think that pseudonyms are advantageous. My opinion on the matter is if people chose to read your stuff then thats what they chose to read not because you wrote it but because it interests them.

4. Do you think it is possible to be in love with someone and still maintain your independence? Is there anything that helps make having both easier or more likely?

I think that you can have love and still be independent. Just because you are in love with someone does not mean that you have to buy them everything or that they have to buy you everything. To stay independent and still have love all you have to do is not ask that person to buy you anything or don't ask them to buy you things that you know you can get yourself.

5. How often do you think someone's social status affects his or her decision to marry? Why or why not?

I don't think it does.

6. Do you believe in the supernatural, i.e. ghosts, etc.?

Yes I do. I believe that when someone dies that there spirit can still come and visit family like being a guardian angel.

7. Do you believe in Fate or just coincidences?

I believe in fate because if something was meant to happen then it is going to happen. i do not believe that there are coincidences.

8. Have you ever had an encounter that you believe was powered by the supernatural? If so, do tell!

No I have not.

9.
Do you think that Nature, or the environment, plays a major role in your daily actions and interactions with people? If so, how? If not, why?

Yes I do because my attitude for the day depends on the weather that morning or when ever I woke up/left the house. Also where I am going affects my attitude along with the people there.

act5

I think the play so far is really good but some parts are kind of comfusing. I think reading
the book and watching the movie at the same time is maybe comfusing for me. I found it eaiser
to understand to watch the movie. I do eventually understand whats going on after reading the
book at lease 3 times. Sometimes it was if i would just have read the book and totally forget
what in the heck i just read. So i would have to keep reading it over and over to finally
understand. Each of the different virsions have helped but somtimes they made it more than
what it need to be. They made it clear that they were the same but in there own way. This book and movie were defininatly worth lookin at.

Act IV Journal

When we first started read The Taming of the Shrew, I was really confused about what was going on because I did not have a clear understanding of what was going on because of all of the Shakespearean language. But as the play progress, I became more adjusted to it, and I started to understand the plot more. So far I like the play; I think that Pertruchio is doing a great, somewhat comical way of handling his plan to "tame" Katherine. My only question is if she will actually bend to his will and crack. I also think that despite how confusing it is, I like all of character disguises. I think that it contributes to the early idea of metamorphosis, because a large majority of the characters have transformed into other characters. I think that the two versions of the play that we have watched have also made the play more understandable because you can actually see what is going on. I think that the John Cleese version is a good example because each character actually changes in addition to their dialogue. However, I like the Re-Told version more because it has modern day humor between most of the characters, especially Petruchio and Katherine. Strangely, based on certain scenes, I think that certain scenes could give some reason for some believe that The Taming of the Shrew is somewhat sexist. I say that because I've noticed certain scenes, but I still do not think the whole play is misogynistic or sexist.

300 word essay

In this article the author gives her own review on the Shakespeare based play the taming of the shrew. She also uses other examples from other people and what they thought of the play. It seems as if everyone had there own opinions on the play both positive and negative. There were some very little harsh comments made more criticizing on the story’s concept and comparing Shakespeare version to other versions such as, Peter Short’s version. I think from reading the article some people say that Shakespeare’s version was a bit more different and I guess lost a little bit of the concept. I wouldn’t necessarily say that he lost the concept, but maybe his version was changed up a bit because maybe he wanted a little more excitement. Like for instance, in this play he uses actual women playing the women parts, at least that’s what I know. Some people do find Shakespeare’s version sexist, im guessing because of the way Kate is being treated by Petruchio throughout they play, in which to some extent I have to agree on. But on the other hand, he wasn’t necessarily abusing her that was his way of teaching her a lesson, just like what the title says, he was taming her. So I will have to disagree with that also.

Enotes Response Journal

After reading this, I didn’t really have an understanding of what the point was in her criticism. I did not think that her claim of feminism in The Taming of the Shrew was not truly clear because of what she said. It seemed more like she was stating other criticisms by others who felt a certain way about the way that the females are portrayed in The Taming of the Shrew. I thought that her idea of a "feminist ideology" was very much her or any reader's own opinion as well any aspects of The Taming of the Shrew being misogynistic. I think that my opinion may be very different from most people but I feel that in this play it just to show that even the most unbearable people can be "tamed" if you kill them with kindness. I think that despite everything that Pertruchio does to Katherine, there is no indication of sexism in the play. In addition to that, all of the other attention that goes towards Bianca is almost polar opposite to Katherine’s situation. In today’s society there is so much feminism that if we read old comical literature involving females, we immediately assume sexism or misogynistic views. In addition, I also thought that what Katherine A. Sirluck says that The Taming of the Shrew is a satire of Elizabethan patriarchal order, which was in flux during Shakespeare's time, makes a very good point because Elizabeth seemed to be a very uptight, as well as controlling individual (or so she is portrayed.) Barbara Hodgdon states that the play attempts to circumscribe women's "place" has a big impact on late-twentieth century feminist readers. If a majority of the readers are feminist, why wouldn't some view as sexist or misogynistic?!?! I think the one critic that I agreed with the most was Dale G. Priest, who said that Katherine benefits from her transformation from a selfish and angry shrew to a loving wife. This does not sidetrack from my thoughts that certain aspects of the play could be viewed as misogynistic, but I don't see the base of the play strictly revolving around sexism.

TOTS act 4.

In act 4 Petruchio arrives home and starts beating and yelling at his servants and when food is served he throws it off the table and when going to bed throws all of the blankets and sheets off. it is then revealed that Petruchio intends to kill Kate with Kindness. then while traveling back to Baptista the group of Petruchio, Kate and servants encounter Vincentio who doesnt know anything. Then Hortensio reveals himself to Tranio and then Hortensio runs away in anger after seeing Bianca and Lucentio kissing. then a merchant possing as Vincentio summents the marriage and that's it. the John Kleese version and the youtube version are very different. i rather think that the Youtube version is more better.

TOTS act 3.

In act 3 Bianca is introduced to Litio and Cambio who are really Hortensio and Lucentio. They both argue over who gets the most time with Bianca. While Cambio teaches Bianca latin he is secretly wooing her by telling her he is really Lucentio and that he wishes to wed Bianca. While this is going on Kate is weeping becuase she thinks that her father doesnt love her and nobody does, but is a little shocked that Petruchio is proposing to her. Then it flashes to the wedding and Petruchio looks like a fool and he is dressed absolutley disgustingly. And when asked to change his clothes Petruchio says "No Way, Hozey." or something like that. The Petruchio grabs Kate and charges away taking her to his home.

Tots act 2.

In act 2 of TOTS, a man named Lucentio has come to the great city of Padua to study philosophy. WHile with his faithful servant Tranio Lucentio hears an arrguement over marriage. Lucentio eavesdrop and learns that 2 old geezers named Gremio and Hortensio have tried to wed the hand of a beautiful young woman named Bianca, but her father Baptista has said that no one can wed Bianca until his other daughter named KAtherine is married first. Katherine is a mean scowling woman while Bianca is all nice and soft. Then Hortensio contacts his friend petruchio and pursuades him into Marrying Katherine. Petruchio came to Padua to marry a rich woman and get more money. Katherine is later clarified as really jealous of Bianca and Bianca is not interested in either Gremio or Hortensio. The Lucentio (Tranio) joins the race for Bianca and both of the other suitors are astounded. At the end of Act 1 Gremio and Hortensio are indebted to Petruchio for aggreeing to woo Katherine. The Wooing of Katherine includes alot of yelling, slapping, sexual harrasement and curse words.

TOTS induction questions.

The trick playes upon christopher sly is one of the utmost meanness. The trick is that Sly would become a lord in 24 hours and when he woke up he would be in a lush bed and he would be told that he was sick. People would deam him insane but he eventually realizes that he is infact a lord. The trick is played on him becuase the real lord is a jerk. He think's that it is funny to play tricks on poor people, just to fill his belly with a few laughs.

The reason that "The Taming Of The Shrew" is considered a play within a play, is becuase that actors perform the play while a sort of play-joke is being pulled on Sly.

300 word essay.

after reading the article it seems that this play was a fall back on elizabethan society and that there were alot of mixed veiws about this play becuase of feminism ideaology. like about teh veiws on marriage and other things in the play. and this critic named Barbara Hodgdon says that this play comepletley switches the veiws on genders in the 21st century. and alot of people respond alot to petruchio's whoopin of his servant's and how he whoop's kate with kindness. (Oh Snap) and alot of people are kind of puzzled that at the end of Act 5 Katherine says that all wives should serve their husbands faithfully and without questions. which really puzzled adiunces who saw this play.

Introduction Questions

When we first started reading this play I expected it to be hard to understand because I had always heard that Shakespeare was complicated to understand. I expected it also to be very interesting and good like Romeo and Juliet. That play was drama filled and so far so is this one is too, just like i expected it to be. I found out what the "Shrew" is that the title is talking about and I found out that the Shrew is a man named Baptista's oldest daughter, Katherine. Katherine is a young women who is loud and nobody really likes her. The person doing the taming is Petrucio. He plans on taming her by killing her with kindness. His version of kindness is when the food comes he throws it on the ground and says that its not good enough for her. When it is time for bed he throws the pillows on the floor saying they are not soft enough and tosses the cover on the floor saying its not good enough.

act 4 blog

So far I think that it is very true to its reputation about being a play within a play. There are so many people dressed up as other people that it is confusing. It is very easy to forget who is who because they play the parts so well. Both of the movie versions of the play in my opinion helped a lot because I think it is a lot easier to understand what someone is saying when you can see the person's face and their body language. In act 5 I think that there is going to be a wedding between Bianca and the real Luciento. I also think that the real Vinciento will show up and their plan will be put on complete blast. Also I think that at first Baptista will be mad because he was lied to the whole time but then I think that he will come to realise that they did it out of the love that Bianca and Luciento, the real one, had for each other. My main question is how are they going to pull off this wedding? Especially if they dont want Baptista or the real Vencientio to find out about their plan. Or find out that the real Lucientio is pretending to be Bianca's tutor, Cambio, and that the man pretending to be Lucientio is Tranio.

Act 4

In act 4 after Katherine and Petruchio are married, they go back to Petruchio’s house and that is where the real madness happens. When they first arrive, Petruchio goes off on everyone for no apparent reason and he is just rejecting everything and everyone. This begins to make Katherine feel bad and she starts to defend some of Petruchios servants. Pretty much afterwards, he is killing her with kindness and is making oblivious decisions. I thought it was funny because Katherine was seeing how she treats people, but I didn’t think she realized it. Petruchio is doing a good job at pretending to be very mean because in a way he’s scaring her, at least in my opinion. From watching the retold Shakespeare comedy version, I understand the play much, much better. Mainly because it’s a more moderate version and I can relate more to the concept without questioning myself. In act 5 I am expecting more of a conclusion out of it. I like dramatic endings with stories like this. I do wonder if Bianca and Lucentio will marry and how will Tranio turn back into Tranio again.
Journal Act 4

In act four Petruchio brings Kate to his house and acts like he’s trying to pamper Kate by getting her lots of things, but then acting like he thinks they’re not good enough for her and taking them away before she even receives them. He also acts this way with necessities for her such as he won’t let her eat because “the food’s not good enough for her” and not letting her sleep.
I really enjoy this play so far for many reasons. One I think the plot is hilarious and serious at the same time. Also, (this may sound mean and off topic, but for me it’s not) this story reminds me of my own sister. My sister only has a certain amount of niceness in her and she can only use some at a time. She can’t spend too much time with people being nice because it won’t last that long. People who aren’t in our family love her and think she’s perfect and nice because to them she is, but because she uses up all her niceness on her friends and other people she is absolutely horrible to her family. She is almost always cranky and tired and she takes it out on us. She acts exactly like Kate does around family and in some ways better and some ways worse. I relate to this play because my sister reminds me sort of a mixture between Bianca and Kate because everyone thinks Bianca is perfect and Kate is mean and rude. Just like I said everyone thinks my sister is perfect, but to her family she is a perfect Kate.
I think both of the films we’re watching are helpful. They really help me understand the play better and I like how we’re not just watching one of them because seeing the different ways they’re made helps me understand the story from every perspective. Also seeing both helps me because if I don’t understand one part in one of the movies I compare it to the same part in the other movie and it makes me understand it better or even completely.

act IV

My thoughts about this play are that i find it very entertaining and i like the way Shakespeare even in this play manages to make the men look like idiots. Also i think that this play can be very funny at times. For example when Pertrutio makes fun of his slaves and makes Kate stay up all night and i like the way he "kills her with kindness". The versions that we have seen in class have made it easier to understand the play because i get to see it in two different perspectives. For example i get to see it in an old English way and i get to see it in a more modern version that makes a lot more sense then Shakespeare's language. I think that Bianca and Lucentio are going to get married and Pertrutio is going to get the love of Kate and he's going to fall in love with her. The questions i have are: What made Shakespeare write a play that can so easily fit in with modern day events? Also how he could make such a serious play into a kind of funny play?

Act 4 Summary.

in Act 4 of Taming Of The Shrew it starts off at Petruchio's house when he just arrives with Katherine and he is literally killing her with kindness. he is not letting her eat at all and when she is about to go to bed he throws all of the pillows off the bed along with the blankets and sheets. it is kind of funny. then in the second scene the merchant and tranio are being dressed up to look thier part as Lucentio and Vincentio. then Biondello and Tranio talk about the wedding and what will happen. and Biondello in his stupidiness tells Lucentio to secretly marry Bianca, without nobody knowing. in Act 5 the real VIncentio will come and all this stuff will happen.

What are your thoughts about the play so far? How have the versions we've watched (the John Cleese version, and the Shakespeare Re-Told version) helped you understand the play? Or have they made it more difficult? What do you think is going to happen in Act V? What questions do you have?

300 word essay

in the article for homework the auther points out alot of things about the play and its sexism towards women. well anyway alot of critics have widely different veiws on this particular play. like some think that it is sexist toward women to think that they should just do what thier husbands tell them to and all that. so says Katherine in the play, and all that. some say that is just some women would say in elizabethan time and in the present if they loved their husband enough. i think this play is a little sexist like how Petruchio is treating Katherine like an animal at first. but that's about it. their really is no other sexism except for the part where Grumio won't give Katherine food, because he says it will make her more angry.

Taming of the Shrew Definitions and 300word summary

300word summary
The criticism I chose was the modern criticism. The article says that most of the criticism comes from most of the feminists and people that think it’s unfair that a woman should be obligated to “serve” her husband and listen to everything her husband says. Also people also think that it’s a little bit funny because of how many people reject the idea that women had to listen to what their husband said every time he says something. Also other criticism says that they think that its offensive that Pertrutio has to break down Kate and that he has to abuse his slaves in order to “break” the wall between him and Kate’s love. Even though some people are offended by the fact that Pertrutio abuses his servants to break Kate’s spirit, some people are happy to see that because it sort of makes him look like a jerk, when sometimes today people use women as the mean ones and the ones that yell at their husband. There was a woman that said “Taming of the Shrew’s obsessive attempt to circumscribe woman's ‘place’ has especially fatal attractions for late-twentieth century feminist readers and spectators.” Getting a little bit off track, I think it’s confusing how there’s a group of people that think Taming of the Shrew is offensive and there’s a totally different group that just loves the play and never really thought that the play was sexist, and these are women that I know. So yeah my argument is that how do we know what’s actually sexist and what’s not because I guess all about opinion because people make it out to be that all women think that the play’s sexist when some don’t.

TOTS Act 3

In act 3, Lucentio thinks of a way to reveal his true identity to Bianca without the other tutor, Litio finding out. So what he does is pretends he explaining some Latin words and phrases when he’s really telling her who he is while Litio is on the side tuning his instrument. Bianca responds in the exact same way letting him know that she understands but in a way she doesn’t trust him or in my opinion is trying not to believe him. The day Katherine is supposed to be married she seems to be a little upset and runs off weeping. I think she weeps because she thinks that she is being stood up by Petruchio. I think that reveals that deep down inside she does have emotional feelings and is really not an evil person. It also lets us know that certain people can get the best of her. When Petruchio shows up at the wedding ceremony, he is dressed very exotic I should say. in other words he looks like a pirate who went crazy. From my understanding, he is wearing dirty underwear, an extremely large hat and other wild stuff with his unexplainable attire. I think he did that just to scare Katherine, which I think is very amusing.

Taming of the Shrew Act III

Act III is a little bit funny to me because Lucentio basically tells Bianca that he’s in a disguise. Also this is when things start to get difficult. For example Katharine was supposed to be a mean and vile shrew, but then she starts to cry. I think this shows that she has a sensitive side to her. Pertrutio I think has taken on a big challenge for him since he has to find a way to make Kate calm, but she’s just mean and she insults people so much. So now that everything is sort of starting to show up it’s getting to be to much change way, way to quickly. I think what might make things funny is that in order for Pertrutio to “put out Kate’s flames” he’s going to have to show this evil dark side to him and he’s going to have to be even more evil then Kate is and she’s just insane. Also the agreement of the tutors is that Hortensio as (Litio) and Lucentio as (Cambio) will both teach Bianca at the same time but Cambio keeps telling Litio to tune up his guitar even when his guitar is fine. When Pertrutio comes to the wedding, he’s dressed as bad as you could ever look when you go to a wedding. He’s wearing a weird looking hat and he’s wearing very badly chosen clothes. Also something that has everyone at the wedding amazed is Pertrutio pushes the priest down on the ground.

2. Write 300 words responding to the reading. The author lists a number of ways that different critics have interpreted the play. You may choose one or two of those and agree or disagree with them. Or you may create your own theory as to why this play, compared to so much of Shakespeare's other work, seems sexist, maybe even misogynistic, to many readers.

TOTS: Act 3

I thought that Act three was funnier than Act two. I mean I thought it was a little messed up how he somewhat stood her up, but I think I understood why he did it. I thought it was clever of him to show up so ridiculously was a rather strange way of trying to teach her a lesson or trying to establish order. I thought that the funniest part was when Grumio came back to report what events took place during the wedding. Grumio said that Pertruchio cursed at the altar, hit the priest, threw food and embarassed Gremio so badly that was compelled to leave. I liked the other parts of the story because of How Pertruchio just announced his intentions for him and her. I thought it was interesting to see Katherine in such a state of anguish because it makes her look vulnerable. It seems as though she is unabledeal with his control.

TOTS: Act 2

I liked Act two alot mor because the story starts to break down, and gets more within depth. I didn't understand what was going on at first because of all the character changes. I feel like this story heavily revolves around a ruse or metamorphosis. I think that one major example of this the beginning. In the beginning of the book, everyone changes their appearance inorder to fool a very drunk and disoriented Christopher Sly. In addition to that, they even change his appearance to create the illusion that he is a king (not to mention that there is also a play within a play) . I thought that Katherine's methods for gathering information were very unorthodox (as well as heavily induced anger and possible jealousy). I didn't understand what was going on at first but as soon as she mentioned Gremio, I knew what was going on. I think that my favorite part of Act two was when Katherine met Pertruchio. I liked their conversation because of he didnt seemed phased by her, and he made everything that she said into a sex joke. I liked it because it was a really good showcase of Shakespeare's raunchiness.

act 2

Introduction blog

The beginning of this play was funny, but I feel like it is off to a really slow start, non of Bianca’s suitors are to my liking and they all seem pretty old and boring. I mean, maybe its just how Shakespeare wanted them to be, but they are all really dull, and aren’t the sharpest tools in the shed, and why are they so desperate to get with Bianca in the first place? How many girls have they known in their lifetime? I mean… there should be more out there right? more than one specific girl named Bianca out and available…?? Katherine on the other hand, was nothing like I expected her to be. I mean.. she cries because guys are after her sister, and thinks her father doesn’t love her because he wants to marry Bianca off. I would be happy that he didn’t want to get rid of me. The fact that Katherine hits Bianca is ridiculous as well, because hitting your sister will defiantly stop guys from hitting on her, and will of course result in hr telling you who she likes. I don’t know why, but Petruchio makes me angry too. He’s just so obnoxious, trying to win and annoy Katherine at the same time, I’m surprised that Katherine hasn’t hit him yet. Why is she so mean to every one else and not to the one guy that really counts? These characters are just so cliché, they are either just plain dumb boys, girlie girls, or girlie girls trying to be not so girly. Shakespeare really did design some pretty annoying characters this time…Whether it be on purpose or on accident, he succeeded.

TOTS intro ?s

1. The trick being played on Christopher sly is a rather mean one. A rich guy comes along and sees him lying asleep on the floor outside of a bar. He decides to conduct an “experiment on him” in which he will dress him up in nice clothes, put him I a room in his house, have his servant dress up as a girl and pretend to be his wife, and basically make him think he’s a rich guy who just woke up from a bad dream.

2. The Taming Of The Shrew is considered a play within a play, because the story is being acted out in front of Christopher Sly by a bunch of actors. This play is considered to be his entertainment while he wakes from his sleep.

Tots Act 2.

Act 2 was kind of funny. in act 2 we meet, Cambio(Lucentio) who is a teacher of science, mathematics and languages. and we meet Lutio(Horensio) and he is the music teacher. Petruchio i think and we then see him and Katherine having a little chat about themselves and all the time, and Katherine keeps insulting Petruchio all the while and Petruchio doesnt really care. he just keeps saying how wonderful Katherine is and when her father asks how it went, Petruchio says that it went well, and they were to be married. Baptista is really happy and says that they will be married next sunday. and a week after that Bianca will be married. then we go to Lutio, Cambio and Bianca. and while Lutio is tuning the guitar Cambio tells Bianca who he really is, and i guess Bianca kind of falls for him, then Lutio hurts himself from tuning the instrument too much. and thus ends act 2.

Taming of the shrew act II

Act 2 was very crazy. Pertutio is the man that agrees to marry Katherine, meaning that Bianca is open for anyone that wants her. When Katherine ties Bianca's hands up she hopes that Biana will tell her who she loves. Bianca tells Katherine that she doens't love anyone and that she thinks Katherine likes Gremio. Pertrutio tells Baptista that Katherine was kissing his neck and Baptista reacts very happily and he starts laughing very loudly and he discusses who Bianca is going to marry, and he deciseds that the person who will marry Biana is going to be the richest person. Also in act two is when everyone gets introduced to each other and Pertrutio asks Baptista about Katherine. So after Lucentio desguised as Cambio gets introduced to Baptista Pertrutio makes a speech about how all he has to do to get Katherine's love is to be a fire and he uses a metaphore that in their relationship there will be a lot of winds and with those winds Pertrutio will be able to tame Katherine.

TOTS:Act 2

Katherine tries to see if Bianca would confess to her that she likes Hortensio but Bianca keeps telling her that she doesn’t have any mutual feelings towards him and Katherine doesn’t believe her and continuously backhands her in the face to make her tell the truth. And Bianca gets annoyed after awhile and wants her sister to stop harassing her because she knows that she is innocent on all accounts but Katherine doesn’t believe her worth anything, since she has strong feelings for Hortensio which Bianca doesn’t show any interest in. This situation shows Katherine’s jealousy of Bianca in which all the other suitors adore her more than Katherine and all Katherine wants to do is call her out and make her look guilty, but instead Bianca calls her out by bringing up a jealousy issue to make her even more angry and more jealous at her sister. Bianca doesn’t understand why Katherine is doing this to her and doesn’t really appreciate her hitting her in the face just to show how she feels so insecure of her Bianca’s personality and how she attracts more people than Katherine does. So pretty much the whole point of her tying her sister’s hands together is so that she can basically accuse of liking someone she has feelings for when it’s not even true.
